4-17-09, Potomac River report

Our plan today was to chase stripers around the Greenway Flats area of the Potomac River. This area lies just below Mt. Vernon. Today's crew was Wes Wakefield, Paul Kordon and Kent Williams.

After a bit of a slow start, we finally got on the water at around 7:30 AM and we had lures in the water by 7:45!  Each of us was throwing something different so we could establish a pattern. We did this for nearly four hour and had the pattern down to a science. No matter what we threw...they we not the least bit interested! As well, no matter where we went, the were not interested in our offerings.

At 11:45, we went back to where we started and immediately, Paul signaled that he had a fish on.....

Thankfully and mercifully, the skunk was off the boat! Thanks Paul!!

A few minutes later, Wes has a fish on and things are starting to look up!!

Next, I caught a dinky little bass but Kent was also hooked up and we all had a fish on the boat!

Wes and Kent each caught a second fish but unfortunately, they got stuck on that number.

Paul and I started trading catching and I tied him at 4 with this guy!

Then he hooked up again to take the lead....

.....and brought this guy in!

Paul ended up with eight nice largemouth bass. the bite then went cold and all I could do at that point was take pictures of three guys having a great time!

We never did catch any stripers but we did manage 16 largemouth bass. I will take that any day....sure beats working!

Ok it looks as if you where to far in to the shore if you catch LGMouth. But LGMouth still pull.... 8 foot edge deep drift is what works for me.

But I am sure you tried that.. Also did you try that point I pointed out?

Yep...we did the 10 8, 6 and 4 ft drifts....no stripies.....none of the other boats caught any either (that I saw), it was weird. Maybe they were deeper but we tried trolling Rebels in 15-20 ft and no luck either.

Jon Griffiths (salmo) caught two stripers yesterday in between Piscataway and Ft. Washington but I don't know what size.

We did try the point once but nothing was happening.
