I met up with my friend Steve Boardman and his six beagles and a couple of guy's that have a hunting lease near Culpepper.
Here is John with one of the 11 rabbits harvested.
The dogs did a great job bringing the rabbits back to the gun and we all shot well enough to make it an outstanding day afield.

Pretty coll! Do the beagles chase the rabbits into the open or get 'em after they have been shot?

The dogs just follow the rabbit scent, which will push the rabbits. Almost always the rabbits will circle back to where they were jumped, so we spread out and wait. During the run the rabbits will try to trick the dogs by doubling back or side jumping. Good dogs will can sniff out the trail. You can tell if they are or the trail because they will be baying if they lose the trail they are silent. When the rabbits come back they can be slow hopping or carrying the mail quick. If the rabbit sees you they will be flying by fast. If you miss the shot the dogs keep going and you wait on the next circle.

The best part of the hunt for me is to listen to the dogs progress while they unravel the scent trail.
