11-08-09, Lower Potomac Striper Report

Mr. Steele, me, and four other club member met Capt. Jeff and First Mate Russell at Shymansky's marina in Cobb Island at 6 00 a.m.  We bordered his 35 ft boat and took off for an hour ride to the spot we would be trolling at that was about 10 miles from the bay.

Mr Steele and First Mate Russell.

The hour ride.

Then we set up for trolling.  We had 19 rods out and we were using planar boards.  We were covering depths down to about 40 ft.  We would look at the fish finder to find the bait fish, so we could find the fish.  After about two hours of trolling Russell yelled FISH ON! and I stepped up to the plate.  After about 10min of fighting I landed a 40", 22lb Striper.  I received a Maryland citation for this.

Then we circled around to the same spot and after a half hour, Russell yelled FISH ON! and Brandon stepped up and fought again for about 10 minutes and he landed a 31" 11lb Striper.

The Fight!

The Fish!

We then trolled for about 5 more hours without nothing.  We then brought in all of the lines, and headed back to the Marina.

We then arrived at the Marina after a hour and a half ride and showed off our fish, got lots of oooo's and aaaah's

then Capt Jeff filleted them for us.

There was a tournament at the marina that day and we were told we would have won if we were in it.  Both of our fish individually were bigger than everyone elses and we had more fish than almost everybody.  Overall it was a great day and we all had lots of fun.  We are already talking about going back in the Spring a couple times.

Outstanding!

I am glad you guys had a great time. Jeff and Russell are top notch guys....they don't get better thatn that. ...I wish I could have joined you.

Let me know when you want to set up the trips and I will get with Jeff. Is there any interest for the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving?

We were thinking about in the Spring.  Striper season start on April 15th I think he said, so were thinking about maybe getting a trip on the 18th or 25th and then another in May.  He said the Striper fishing is really good in the spring.

By the way, the chicken we get around here really doesn't taste like chicken. I remember, as a little boy in Cuba, watching the chicken get caught, neck twisted, dressed out, cooked and eaten.....that night! THAT....was chicken!

Re: 11-08-09, Lower Potomac Striper Report

Charlie - You are catching a lot of heat about rockfish tasting like chicken. Josh said it well in the post above. Perhaps you overcooked the rockfish?

Anyway, we are all glad you had a great day with Capt. Jeff (we knew you would) and also that you have experienced some of that "convict" fish, as Capt. Mike likes to refer it to.
