Went to Front Royal Canoe Company with a neighbor on Sunday - did the 5 mi float from the State Park to Kero Landing. Weather was perfect, but the water levels were still pretty low - much more shallow than the Potomac, and alot more grass. There was probably a good mile of water that was completely covered in grass. Had to walk the canoe in several places. Took seven hours to do the 5 mile stretch ( and had we known the river, we would have definitely bypassed some of the early water in favor of the last mile).
The good news is that there are plenty of smallies in the river. Combined we caught 29 fish, and lost twice that (many jumping off right by the canoe). Largest was 14 inches - probably around 1 1/2 . . . most were in the 8-10" range. Also a bunch of bluegill. The best lure was the pumpkin grub on a 1/16 jig hook (light was needed due to the grass) - also caught fish on spinners, crankbait and dead ringer worms. In terms of wildlife, we had a group of turkey come right down to the river edge and had two bald eagles fly out of a tree directly above us. All in all, a great day on the water.
I would give the Front Royal Canoe Company a good rating - the canoe was in top shape (for this late in the season), the drop off and pick up right on time, and pretty good guidance. Only a 1h15m drive.

good to see you got some fish
water is low and we need all the rain we can get. I'm doing a two-nighter upriver a bit this coming weekend and live in that area, so if you're ever down that way and need some help, etc, just ask.
thats a tough stretch when the water is low and grassy, then again, most of the river is under those conditions, but plenty of fish up to 14" to be had for enjoyable days.
