10-12-23, Potomac River

On Wednesday, I got a text from John Lipetz stating that there was an open seat for a trip with Capt. Drey Thomason on Thursday. Further, he said that we would go out of Bushwood (on the Wicomico River) and would fish the Potomac from Cobb Island up. "Heck yes", I said, "those are my old stomping grounds."

We were to meet at noon at Bushwood Wharf but I demanded to John that we stop at The Chaptico Market & Deli. Of course, he obliged as he likes it as much as I do. This would be the 1st time for Bill Owensby.

This used to be Quade's Store and Restaurant where I had many crab cake lunches with Carl and others back in the day.

We motored out of the Wicomico...

...and our Our 1st stop was the rock pile at the mouth of the Wicomico and I got to catch the 1st fish of the day!

Caught it with an old Cotton Cordell Rattlin' Minnow (single hooks, of course).

I think John and Bill each scored 1 on a jerk bait here.

We then went out to the Potomac to look for birds and breaking fish. We found some lazy birds here and there and no breaking fish. Still, we caught some fish!

The bite was relatively slow and we really had to coax them to bite.

John did something that I've never seen in numbers. He actually foul hooked 5 stripers! Each time, it looked like he had a big one on because of the way they were hooked. We could feel the fish but getting them to bite was another thing. John figured out how to get them anyway! lol

The sun was starting to drop...

...so we bee lined it (at 45mph) back to the rock pile for one final fling.

Earlier in the day, Capt. Drey commented that the Potomac River rockfish really liked lipless cranks so I tied the CC back on. By this point, some of the paint was rubbing off.

I was throwing to a known rock pile and could feel my lure bumping it so I paused it and then bam!

It felt like a 30+"er because of the way it ate the lure. Mouth was wide open and I reeled it in. Good fight and good fish!

On the next cast, I hit the rock and the lure stayed there. Oh well!

Now it was getting dark so we called it. We caught a couple of dozen stripers but earned every one of them. They were just not active today. Should have been there yesterday because they were chewin' then! Oh well....again! lol

Got a couple of nice shots as the night rolled in...

Bill had eaten 1/2 of his stuffed ham sammie and declared that it was really good. On the way home, he ate the other half and declared that he would drive back to the Market to get it again. Another satisfied Chaptico Market customer!

Time to go fishin' again!

Looked like a nice day. Pretty close to your bedtime when you got home.

Just goes to show with enough gas, you can find fish
