8-29-23, Wicomico River

As our appointed day came closer, I began to get weary of the weather forecast. However, last night I saw a window of opportunity so I told the boys that it was game on.

As we drove to Chaptico, it was drizzling most of the way and the clouds were heavy and low. Here we are driving close to 90 to fish and it's gonna be a wet one . mad

But, magically, when we got to Chaptico market, the drizzle stopped.

Breakfast twas the typical sausage, egg and cheese sammie and the 3 of us were satisfied. No pics.

We started fishing close by as I wanted to monitor the weather and all of us git our skunks off.

Then we moved down to the dock that has been so good, bypassing 3-4 known perch haunts.

This was a good move as we pounded the shoreline and caught over a hundred fish,,,and some variety!

And some triples!

Biggest croaker I've seen in years!

We were now at the mouth Mrs. Wolf's Cove and I told George and Leon that, over the years, there had been some good fishing in here. Not today though. I think we got one so I went no further and got back to the mouth were we started catching some quality perch and then this...

Normally, Leon says something like "Here we go" when he gets a perch. This time, he was quiet but the bend of his rod showed us he had a huge perch. Or something else.

I got the net when I saw what it was and I was hootin;' and hollerin' since we had talked about the possibility of catching one.

We continued on our way and kept catching.

At this point, it was getting close to lunch but I wanted to fish one more spot. Ironically, we stayed on this one shoreline for over a mile and never even hit places like White's Bar.

As we were running, we could see some rain and shure enough we ran right to it. I veered off course a bit to get away from it and we decided that a couple of hundred fish was enough! lol

We out the boat up quickly and without incident and back to the Market we went.

George and I bought some freshly ground  breakfast sausage to take home and we ordered our lunch.

Leon- fried chicken and potatoes
Ernie- Stuffed ham sammie
George- Souse sammie

We got some other stuff including some deviled eggs.

No pics but it was goooood!!

Needless to say, the ride home was satisfying even though we  were going through some rainy areas and lots of traffic. We kept saying, "man, what a day"! Leon was top dog followed by George and then me.

I would say that today was right up there in one of the best fishing days of the year.

Re: 8-29-23, Wicomico River

Another Cinderella session - thx to the Skipper for putting us on fish.

Leon said last time I went out with George, I got one fish.  This trip made up for that.

And on the way home we had a fly buzzing us.  Through Tysons, I'm looking at an 18 wheeler that got close while Ernie was battling the fly and driving.  Finally, opening all the windows, the humans achieved victory.

Last couple trips, an older Shimano Stradic 1000 was giving me fits on the bail.  Tore it apart this morning and discovered a plastic bushing that disintegrated and was causing the bail to bind and the springs not to work.  Cleaned it all out and bail works, although it's sloppy because of the lose of the bushing.  Another negative about Shimbindo's, although I have to admit, this reel has 1,000's of fish and 100's of hours on it before it decided to take a crap.  For the past 5ish years all it's seen is salt and before that, smallies.  In perspective, I have Mitchel's from the early 60's with no problems - but they have no plastic in their construction.

I should also note that roughly 90% of the fish were caught on George's concoctions!

Nice job!  Very nice variety and Leon is the winner with the big Striper and Redfish!

A few concoctions LOL

These take Gulp (or any soft plastics work in salt)

I like the bottom one with gulp shiners. I add a split ring to the eye. I've found that after several fish flex the spring that the knot loosens.

Yesterday, they chose George’s lures over Gulp.

We had a good discussion as to why.

Most of the time a minnow bait works - which is the Gulp on the jighead.

But yesterday we believed the fish where chasing ghost shrimp which the jigs tied with silicone hair imitates

Good tip Bob - I may have to try that

Good stuff guys. I need to start targeting some of those juvenile flounder for tagging purposes.

I'm sure that there are lots of juvi flounder in there. Whenever we slowed down the baits. we got a different bump which we believe were flounder.

Will they make a comeback? That would be awesome!

Re: 8-29-23, Wicomico River

Gents,  I really appreciate your reports.  It's always an epic adventure regardless of catches, but this one is truly epic.  I realized I can make a run down there (Wicomico) from my area (Aquia) in about 20-25 min I think by boat.  Although I have not yet once fished from my boat! lol.
Just when I was going to ask about technique and lures.....I see the setup by george.
I'm working on getting more comfortable all around and I don't have a trolling motor just the primary yamaha 250.  Also, I have to admit that I'm a little iffy about getting the boat all slimed up! hahahaha

Slow roll a beetle spin type spinnerbait off the bottom.  You'll loose a few

Ernie said I could lip one but I was cautious

Although I have not yet once fished from my boat!

Dude.  We need to fix that.  I'm retired now so give me a shout when you feel like playing hooky

Wow, that's a fantastic perch + pick guys, way to go!  For reasons that elude me at the moment the perch bite in my river has really fallen off, hopefully just a temperature transition....fall is about to settle in.

I try to keep up with the SRRKC WP tourney and no one has an 11" perch yet!

Could it be because we didn't enter? :-)
